Smoke dictator is a piece of electrical equipment which alerts occupants of a building through unusual sound whenever smoke is detected within the device’s vicinity. It is a life saving device which warns inhabitants about the occurrence of combustion that is capable of posing serious threat to people and property.

The device, which is usually hung on the ceiling, may sense and detect smoke by sounding alarm in a place where it is installed. Smoke detector used to be powered by either electricity or batteries. To ensure effective functionality, this device should be regularly cleaning and batteries replaced at regular intervals.

It is on record that smoke mostly kills victims of infernos before the fire consumes them. However, having a functional smoke detecting system is capable of reducing the number of casualty during fire disaster.

The National Fire Safety Code, 2013, which prescribes minimum safety standards for prevention and control of fire disaster, provides that property developers as well as users of buildings should install smoke detectors in appropriate locations in buildings.

For safety of lives, fire service authorities at both federal and state levels should enforce smoke detector regulation in order to minimize the menace  of uncontrolled fire in Nigeria.
