When you put old wine in new bottles, you are only covering the old stuff with an attractive exterior decoration. So although I am in support of rebranding Nigeria through rebranding Nigerians, we should not lose focus by concentrating on the external (packaging) when the internal (the content) is still bad. I believe Professor Akunyili should concentrate more on how to make Nigerians think right because as a man thinketh, so is he.
In the Quran, Allah says He does not change the condition of a people until they change what is with them. What is with us is nothing but being in control of our thoughts, hearts and actions. These are what control our whole being. Until we as conscious individuals, begin to do things differently, no leader or rebranding can salvage our present predicament. So, until each and every Nigerian take responsibility, rebranding is taking us no where. We need to know the difference between personality and reputation. Personality is defined as the quality of a person’s innate character that makes them attractive on the outside while reputation is the way people see you externally based on their past experiences with you which does not necessarily portray the real you.
Without much ado, let us not forget that no matter the amount of rebranding campaign, Nigerians are still Nigerians. We have a spirit of rebellion deeply rooted in us so much so that the bad ones are the ones that succeed in the system because they are the majority and the few good ones suffer neglect, frustration, false allegation redundancy and finally be ejected without justification and even if they petition, the same corrupt Nigerians will refuse to handle the issue with milk of human kindness . Any way God dey.
Until we as individuals resolve to do what is right no matter what it will cost us, then nothing can change our situation. Until we search inwards and clear our minds of all atrocities and decay in our attitude, no regime can save us. In the Qur’an, Allah says “When a people commit lewdness and abomination openly in the land, God will send a calamity upon them that is unknown to their predecessors” Allah has spoken the truth. We are just reaping the fruit of what we have sown. These days we suffer very strange diseases, hunger, violence, bad leadership etc. These have befallen us because our attitudes are bad. We practices of lying, hypocrisy, backbiting spying, envy, pride, suspicion conspiracy, cheating of different degrees, hatred, anger, greed which leads to looting, breach of trust and what have you. If despite what the churches and mosques are preaching, you still find that the people that attend those places of worship are still adamant and even portray the worst of behaviour, then we can say that either they have not succeeded in their role to teach the people the gospel truth on the best of attitude at homes, office, and in business deals or because change is an individual decision not a collective one. Every preaching falls on deaf ears. The EFCC, ICPC and other bodies established to check corruption in Nigeria have also failed because of rampant insincerity in the fight.
Since Nigerians know what is right but would not want to make the necessary sacrifice to achieve what they want, then we have a long way to go. Until Nigerians whole heartedly opt for a revolution and group themselves into self help groups for attitudinal change at all levels of the society to better the nation, then sanity may not be achieved. 2011 is another chance for us to elect good leaders that will work for the nation and not themselves. But if we are still comfortable will the dubious cliques that deny the righteous ones a chance, then the tragedy continues. I believe evil men succeed only when good men do nothing. Please, Nigerians, do something!
