Indeed, the war against corruption will continue to be illusion so long our judicial institution remains untouchable; in other words the serial corruption taking place in some judicial quotas can only be apprehended using tactical security approach as witness over the weekend. Playing soft with anti-graft war is the reason why some multi billion naira court proceedings were halted or completely impedes haphazardly.
With due apologies to legal luminaries, it is clearly ported in the 5th schedule of 1999 constitution that “No person shall offer a public officer (judges inclusive) any property, gift or benefit of any kind as an inducement or bribe for the granting of any favour or the discharge in his favour of the public officer’s duties” It is how ever noted that “ No public officer shall ASK for or ACCEPT property or BENEFITS of any kind for himself or any other person in account of anything done or omitted to be done by him in the discharge of his duties”
It is quiet unfortunate how judges prostrate so many court proceedings without giving a damn to the consequences of such iniquity. So many citizens became victims of nefarious judgement due to tainted attitude of some judges, some judges have become symbol of corruption and financial anomaly in their domain, some have connive with politicians to deliver ill judgements in their favour. Invading the residencies of judges at nocturnal hours and subsequent arrest of some may be seen as obstruction to rule of law by many, but it is a welcome development to so many Nigerians especially that the siege has yielded some results in discovering huge amount of both local and foreign currencies.
While commending the effort of President Muhammadu Buhari for staging a peaceful war with the Nigerian judiciary; it is pertinent to note that much need to be done to sanitize all the arms of government with the aim of ensuring decorum and sanity to their ethics and rules of engagements. It is however important to caution the Nigerian Bar Association to stay clear from interfering into the journey of salvaging our country from the chains of legal barbarism and also cooperate with security agencies so as to have better Nigeria.
