off a massive campaign to rid the nation’s capital of negative activities that have been posing a threat to the territory’s master-plan. Instead of hailing the moves, some are busy condemning for sport on the pages of newspapers. According to them, it was a question of the minister’s competence, preparedness and capacity that brought about the information gap the minister referred to when he issued his earlier-mentioned warning, during which he lamented how a communication gap between him and some of his aides might have caused the deterioration of the situation.
They also said under the minister’s watch, the FCT as a whole had depreciated. The truth is, it is the massive influx of people puts pressure on the available infrastructure in the territory. Even his staunch antagonists cannot hide the fact that he has succeeded in opening up the capital city more by creating new districts.
In a sane society, the media would have been awash with the praises of the minister for making the effort and especially for coming out to divulge the actual reason that caused the problem. But, the thirst for sabotage and negative intents against whatever good an already hated administration had done, would not allow that. It was in the minister’s effort to reclaim the aesthetics of the city according to its master plan that he inaugurated a high-powered 19-member Special Enforcement Task Team on City Cleaning and Management headed by the principled FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu.
Things done to make Abuja better include identifying all flash points for street hawking/begging, commercial sex workers and other untoward activities in Abuja metropolis for effective pin-down operations. Also, evolving viable options/strategies for effective waste management in the city centre, particularly by enforcing the provisions of the AEPB Act, restricting the operations of tricycles (Keke NAPEP) operators, commercial motorcycles and other unauthorized commercial vehicles from operating within Abuja city. The list is endless.
To give this effort a legal backing, Senator Mohammed declared that he had secured the support of the judiciary for the campaign to keep Abuja clean and free of social menace adding that henceforth there would be no hiding place for offenders. According to him, several mobile courts would be in place to prosecute arrested offenders without delay stressing that he was ready with the necessary political will to wage the social battle on a permanent and sustainable basis. But going with the deluge of negativity in the media, it would not be far-fetched to conclude an orchestrated attack on an obviously working structure.
