Ochekpe who was represented by the Director of River Basin Operations and Inspectorate in the Ministry, Mr. Nelson Nwosu lamented the inadequate rainfall in some parts of the country and said it portends serious implication for water resources development.
She added that significant variability and unpredictable rainfall which impacts on river flows, fresh water ecosystem and ground water levels are among natural factors that also threaten water resource development.
She highlighted the human factors to include, inadequate human and institutional capacity for developing and managing the available water resources and acute shortage of financial resources.
Ochekpe said that the phenomena have serious implications for sustainable development of water resources.
The National Water Institute, Kaduna, organized the event in collaboration with the Cross River Basin Development Authority, Calabar.
The Executive Director, National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna, Dr. Olusanjo Bamgboye said that the conference was unique because it was planned to discuss global issues on water resources and development.
Bamigboye said the objective of the conference was to provide the platform for exchanging and disseminating good practices in water resources management amongst policy makers, experts, and stakeholders.
