The apex professional body for Nigerian scientists, the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), has said inadequate science equipment in public schools across the country is delaying Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.
NAS president, Prof. Ekanem Braide, who disclosed this at NAS Gold Medal Prize Award in the Life Science in Abuja Thursday, upbraided the federal and state governments for their failure to buy modern science equipment for students in primary and secondary schools.

‘’Nigerian students in public primary and secondary schools still have little or no science equipment to compete favourably with their pairs elsewhere. This is one of the reasons our socio-economic growth is delayed,” Braide said.
She called on the governments to increase the funding of science in order to improve the quality of research in the country.
She however said NAS was planning to collaborate with Organised Private Sector (OPS) to strengthen science education in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the scientists at the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics Infection Diseases (ACEGID), Ede, Osun State have won the 2021 NAS Gold Medal Award.
