The event which was free for all was organised last Saturday, by the immediate past Minister of Tourism, Culture, and National Orientation, Sadiq Mohammed, his Director for Culture, George Ufot along with members of the inauguration team.

It was part of events marking the inaugural ceremony of President Goodluck Jonathan. Ushering the evening in, cultural troupes from Nassarawa, Kano, Imo, Ondo, and Akwa Ibom states served the crowd delicacies of dances and movements like many of them had never seen before. In no time, many were seen to be dancing to steps they were familiar with or thrilled by as even those dancing in their seats were forced to stand and join in.

Taking it to another level was Sammie Okposo with his famous white handkerchief steps. As dazzles of fireworks sparked the night sky, the youngsters danced raising white chairs and handkerchiefs in excitement.  Starting off with the campaign song ‘Goodluck to me’, before rendering his hit single ‘Welu welu’, Okposo rounded off with a medley of popular Christian tunes.

Making some sort of a comeback was Daddy Showkey, who started out with his song ‘Welcome’ to an ecstatic crowd who was only too eager to karaoke popular tunes like, ‘If you see my mama’ as he involved two guys in a dance competition. He was followed by Lagos-based female singer, Jumoke who gave a good account of herself.

Just as she walked off, ‘Oleku’ master, Ice Prince came on the brilliantly illuminated stage with the instrumentals of Nas’ ‘Hate me now’ blaring in sync with his swagaliciuos walk. He did not make pretence of having a long list to choose from, yet he went straight to his latest single ‘Super star’ after which he sent the crowd to a frenzy with club banger ‘Oleku’.

MI, clad in a white jacket which contrasted with his all black ensemble was welcomed with a thunderous roar by the fun seekers. The Choc Boi, asked them “the young and free to bone protocol and shake body” as he made everyone jump to his party track ‘Anoti’.

Showing great mastery of the mentality of the crowd and its needs, Mr. Incredible got them to rap along his other hits like “Action film”, “beef”, “my belle, my head” and his monster hit featuring Flavour “Number 1”. At a point they seemed to do it better than he did.

The music sensation gave way for Mo Hits stars K-Switch and Dr. Sid. Dedicating his popular party tune, ‘Pop Champagne’ to President Jonathan, Dr. Sid delivered his songs ‘Something about you girl’ and  ‘Over the moon’.

Doing justice to the night, Wande Coal, just like MI and Dr. Sid, almost brought the stage to its knees with his energetic performance. The youths marched him, step for step and lyrics for lyrics.

Amidst colourful starry fireworks, the single and married as well as expectant mothers like Amina James had undiluted fun as they sang, rapped and danced along to both familiar contemporary hits and traditional Nigerian performances from various states.

A youth present, Henry Agbo said: “it’s the best fun Abuja’s had in ages”.
