The Member representing Abeokuta South Constituency 1 in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Lukmon Atobatele, has appealed to the federal government to increase the salaries of health workers in the country.

Atobatele noted that Nigeria’s health sector also needed adequate funding to end the narrative of health workers relocating abroad for greener pastures.

He was speaking to journalists during a free medical intervention to over 1,000 patients organised by his foundation, Atobatele Lukman Foundation, in Abeokuta on Friday.

The foundation intervention ranged from eye care, dental clinic and surgery to free drugs and eyeglasses, with over 40 doctors and nurses from the US administering the treatments.

 Atobatele stated that his foundation considered the intervention as important because many Nigerians could not access healthcare because of lack of financial capability.

 He, therefore, called on the government: “We urge the government to pump money into the health sector. If the government pumps money into the sector, the issues we have with health will drastically reduce.

 He noted that, “Abroad, registered nurses earn as much as $1,000 a day. Government should please increase their salaries. You cannot expect them to work well when they are not well paid. This is why many of them are running abroad.
