Kano state government has been advised to introduce a subject that will inculcate saving culture in students of secondary schools in the state.

A representative of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Alhaji Ra’u Musa Yar’Adua made the plea at the Global Money Week organized by Mercy Corps in partnership with Kano state ministry of education with theme, ‘learn, save and earn’.

Yar’Adua said the subject would help students understand better the importance of saving and earning money at their tender age.

He said that for any bank to lend money to an individual or a cooperative, there should be sign of commitments by having at least a saving account with the bank. 

”You cannot come to a bank and apply for loan without you saving anything, this is not possible. You must show the bank a level of seriousness by saving some amount with the bank.”

On his part, the Director Kano State Ministry of Education Alhaji Tijjani, assured the organizers of government support towards achieving their goals, appealing to the students to imbibe the saving culture at their early age.

“When these girls learned how to manage money at their early age, it would be easier for them to manage resources effectively when they grown up. The problems many homes are facing now is because the women who are the home keepers don’t have sufficient knowledge about managing their home”

Earlier, the Project Manager, Mercy Corps Nigeria, Esther Musa, said the global money week was an annual event aimed at inspiring children and youths to learn about money saving, creating livelihoods, gaining employment and becoming entrepreneurs.
