Nigeria for the 57th time marked its independence anniversary. Fifty Seven years after our nationalists fought back the sovereignty of the country. Ordinarily, we ought to rejoice on every Independence Day. The anniversary is meant to strengthen our national unity; to remind us of the struggles of our forefathers.  But independence anniversary today in Nigeria is mourned instead of celebrated. It is characterized by empty goodwill messages from politicians who are secretly undermining the country, thus losing its colour and spice every year. There are some states that have completely stopped marking our Independence Day. However, they mark occasions that further create disunity like June 12, civil war etc.

The question today is: how many primary and secondary schools participate in independence anniversary? We see some at the Eagle Square and in a few metropolitan centres and that is all. And is parade sufficient enough in marking the Independence Day? Are empty goodwill messages enough? What are we doing to safeguard the corporate integrity of Nigeria? It is not only the Army that should mark the day; all of us have a role to play. 

It is time we changed our attitude and avoided anything that is capable of causing disunity.
