Independence Day: Firm unites Nigerians with Kanu, Martins match

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1, a novelty football match featuring former Super Eagles stars Kanu Nwankwo and Obafemi Martins will hold in Abuja as part of celebrations aimed at promoting unity and healthy living.

The event, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Riverdo Arena, Airport Road, Lugbe, Abuja, will see T.Pumpy Football Club face off against Riverdo Football Club.

Organisers said the match is designed to highlight the values of peace, wellness, and togetherness while using football — one of Nigeria’s most unifying passions — to inspire citizens.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of T.Pumpy Concept Limited, Mr. Akintayo Adaralegbe, said the firm is supporting the event as part of its contribution to national development, explaining that health and community building remain core priorities.

“Football is more than sport; it is therapy, entertainment, exercise, and above all, a symbol of unity. By bringing Nigerians together on Independence Day, we want to remind ourselves of the importance of peace, wellness, and love,” he said.

The involvement of Kanu Nwankwo, a heart health advocate through his Kanu Heart Foundation, and Obafemi Martins, known globally for his resilience and determination, is expected to add inspiration and excitement to the match.

The organisers said the Independence Day novelty game goes beyond football, as it seeks to encourage Nigerians to embrace teamwork, discipline, and cooperation — values they described as essential both on and off the pitch.
