Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, visited Sidi Saiyyed Mosque in Ahmedabad along with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is on a two-day visit to India. 

The famous mosque holds historical significance for the city as well as India. Often called as the “symbol of Ahmedabad,” this mosque is emblematic of the architectural beauty of Ahmedabad and also the symbol of a time when Gujarat lived and prospered under Muslim rule.

Sidi Saiyyed Mosque was built in 1573 during the rule of last Sultanate of Gujarat. Over the years, the mosque has become popular for its architectural finesse, especially the ornate lattice work, colloquially known as “jali”. The most famous architectural work inside the mosque is “tree of life jali” or the latticework on a semi-circular arch. 

It has become the symbol of architectural grandeur of Gujarat state. Not only this, it has been adopted by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as its official logo. Because of the elaborate lattice work in the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, the Indo-Islamic piece of art work is often referred to as the “Sidi Saiyyed Ni Jali.”
