Udenwa, who spoke through a management staff of the ministry, Mrs Chinyere Agbai, during the opening of a sensitisation workshop on industrial property rights which took place in Kano, said a successful industrial property development would  go a long way in enhancing the country’s diversification efforts as it had the potential of lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

He further said the essence of the workshop was to acquaint participants with a clear understanding of intellectual property issues and to assist government instruments in improving the legal instruments that would ensure protection and efficient administration.

Delivering his address at the workshop, Kano State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Yakasai, said it was high time industrialists were sensitised on the need to register their trademarks in order to avoid imitation.

Yakasai said registration of trademarks was the best way through which the problem of cloning and importation of sub-standard products could be addressed. He said such registration would ensure protection of products as well as enhance creation of harmony among industrialists.

He, however, commended the efforts of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) in the control of importation of sub-standard and fake products into the country, adding that registration of trademark would enhance such efforts.
