Governor Rauf Aregbesola has been declared winner of the August 9th gubernatorial election in Osun State.

While announcing the result at the State’s Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Osogbo on Sunday morning, Returning Officer, Prof.  Bantale Omole said Aregbesola got 394, 684 votes to win the election.

The closest contestant to him was Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)’s flag bearer, Senator Iyiola Omisore who scored 292, 747 votes to emerge second. Labor Part ‘s Fatai Akinbade scored a distant 8, 898 votes.

Prof. Omole who is the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife declared: ” Ogbeni Rauf A. Aregbesola of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, and scored the highest votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

APC won in more than two third- 22 local government areas of the State while the PDP excelled in only eight.

The incumbent Governor recorded a landmark victory in Irewole Local Government where APC won 18328 votes against PDP’s 10, 330.

In Ilesa, the Governor’s country home, APC dusted PDP, winning Ilesa East and West 16,106 and 15,427 respectively as against PDP’s 5,912 and 5,449 in the same order.

Also, in Osogbo Local Government, APC swept 39983 votes while PDP could only get 11513.

Olorunda Local Government is another area where Aregbesola displayed his popularity by carting away 26551 against Iyiola Omisore’s 8483 votes.

It was however, not a sweet sail for the incumbent, as the PDP candidate also showed his prowess in Ife, invariably his area of strength.

Omisore won Ife Central Local Government with 24555 votes against APC’s 9670 while also going ahead to sweep 20831 votes in Ife East Local Government with APC getting only 13821.

It is pertinent to mention that though, Ife was expected to play a big role in helping PDP snatch power from APC, the Party could only muster a slight victory in Ife North Local Government where only 1238 separated the two (APC-8603, PDP-9841).

Apart from the aforementioned, other results were very close with only few votes separating the two leading candidates.

Meanwhile, election did not hold in Alarere polling unit in Atakumosa East Local Government Area while 11 polling units recorded over voting and forged signatures in Ejigbo.
