The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Prof Istifanus Dafwang, said yesterday during an interactive session with some journalists and Civil Society groups that the initiative targeted market men and women.
He said the commission was taking advantage of the shift in election dates to educate eligible voters in the market places about the innovations they would see in their various polling units.
He said the innovations include reconfiguration of the polling units such as relocating centres which used to be in front of notable peoples’ houses to public buildings or open spaces, use of card readers for accreditation between 8am and 1pm on the voting day as well as changes made in ballot papers, which are now customized to constituency levels.
Dafwang, who refuted claims that the postponement of the elections was largely due to pressure mounted on the commission by the presidency, explained that the earlier February 14 date was never feasible and that the shift afforded them a soft landing.
