The union said the development was necessary so that Nigeria can evolve a sound public educational system.
Its General Secretary, Comrade Gbenga Komolafe, who gave the advice in Lagos at the weekend said the dangers of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions in the nation’s education sector calls for urgent implementation of the agreement to save the sector from collapse.
“FIWON notes with regret that the ASUU strike is the direct result of government’s refusal to implement agreement it entered into willingly with the ASUU in 2009 but which government has largely refused to implement since then” he noted.
 He lamented that while the children of the poor have been at home for so long, the rich have their wards in European and American universities where over $500 million (N75 billion) is spent annually on schooling.
Komolafe said, “The huge amount spent by private individuals in government on their children’s school constitutes about 70 percent of the total allocation in 2008 to all federal universities, which can be supported by a recent public statement by a former University Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Faborode.
“This shows that increased funding of education and a revitalized public education will actually save the country a lot of money.
“Unfortunately, our leaders don’t seem to care because their children are not in the Nigerian public colleges and yet it is a proven fact that no country develops without a sound public education system.”
