The Borno State government has expressed its commitment to working with critical stakeholders to have a unified institutional framework to guide the conduct of fatwa by Islamic scholars about some aspects of Islamic law to tackle indoctrination.

Governor Babagana Zulum disclosed this during the closing ceremony of a two-day seminar with theme ‘The Role of Fatwa in Sustaining Peace and Stability,” organised by Indimi Trust Islamic Centre held at Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre, University of Maiduguri.

Zulum explained that there was no better time to organise such an event in view of the insurgency, pointing out that one of the remote causes of insurgency was lack of proper fatwah, and the need for the Ummah to say the right thing while giving any fatwah. 

The governor assured of government’s commitment to work on the outcome of the communique to have a unified institutionalised guideline, adding that government would give maximum support to actualise the mission including tabling the relevant recommendations to the North East Governors’ Forum. 

Zulum emphasised the need for understanding the meaning and proper use of fatwas as the opinion cited by an Islamic scholar (a qualified jurist) about some aspects of Islamic law, adding that was why the state government established the Borno State Preaching Service Board.
