Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has appealed to the West Africa examinations Council (WAEC) not to relocate from Calabar to nearby Akwa Ibom State for alleged insecurity in the state.

WAEC had earlier announced that it is temporarily relocating its office in Calabar to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State due to attack on its facilities.

In a statement by its acting head of public affairs, Demianus Ojijegu, the council said its decision was as a “result of the vandalisation, looting and burning down of the WAEC Branch Office in Calabar by hoodlums on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

“The relocation, which is an interim measure, is to enable the Council to continue to carry out its operations and render services to the Nigerian Child and other stakeholders,” the statement said.

Ayade, who visited the WAEC office in Calabar to assess the vandalised properties, promised to immediately provide alternative office and two Hilux operation vehicles.

He pleaded with the management of WAEC to shelve plans to relocate from the state.

Ayade said “Let me once more apologize profusely to WAEC management for what has happened because this is not in the nature and character of Cross Riverians. We deeply regret this.”
