The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr Ado Ibrahim, has called on his subjects to support the government in the fight against crime and criminality for a peaceful society.

The 93-year-old monarch made the call during activities marking the celebration of his 25 years on the throne at the weekend in Okene, Kogi State.

He said a society without peace could not develop effectively, stressing that parents should intensify effort in the training of their children and wards for a better society.

The monarch also charged youths to go to school and acquire western education, stressing that those who could not should devote time to skills acquisition to be self-reliant.

Equally, the Chief Executive of Connect Development, Ambassador Hamzat Lawal, a scion of the Ebira tribe, who was at the palace, stressed the need to strengthen traditional institutions constitutionally to assist in fighting crime and criminality for a peaceful society.

The anti-corruption activist stated that traditional rulers were key figures that made the colonial administration very effective in achieving its mandate, especially in the area of tax collection.

Ambassador Lawal, therefore, urged the federal government to empower the traditional institutions via legislation to be more efficient in fighting crime to reduce the cases of insecurity bedevilling the nation.

In the same vein, the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche, and Barrister Ramat Tijjani Attah, an international jurist, called for legislation to strengthen the role of traditional rulers.
