The Women and Youths for Development in Africa (WYDA) has urged the Federal Government to carry out a holistic reform of the Police as part of measures to tackle the rising killings and insecurity in the land.
The forum made the appeal at the end of their stakeholders meeting yesterday in Abuja.
The Convener of the WYDA, Chindu Bright Agomuo, said that the importance of the full involvement of the Police in restoring security in the country cannot be over emphasized.
According to him, the nature of the existence and workings of the Police placed them in vantage position to ensure the security and wellbeing of the citizens and the deployment of other security agents in internal operation that is the responsibility is obviously not working.
“The Federal Government should change tactics. If the Police were adequately equipped, they would have performed their constitutional roles and the insecurity in the land would not have been this bad.
“The Police are the repository of intelligence in every society and the Nigeria Police should be properly equipped and their welfare adequately addressed and monitored. We are sure that if this is done, insecurity would be a thing of the past in the country.
Also speaking, the duo of the President of JACCO’s Charity International, Ambassador Jodie Frank and the National President of Persons with Disability Initiative Nigeria, Engr. Augustine Onwuanaegbu, urged the Federal Government to prioritise intelligence and data gathering as part of measures to stem the killings and insecurity in the country.
They lamented that the bloodletting in the country in alarming and that it is worse that there are thousands of Nigeria that have been affected with various forms of disabilities, even when there are no records or data on that.
