The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NACTOMORAS) to ensure its members are captured in a comprehensive national database to strengthen safety and security on Nigerian roads.
Corps Marshal, Alhaji Shehu Mohammed, said the association must embrace technology by educating and registering riders, while enforcing stronger security measures. He spoke at the unveiling of NACTOMORAS’ 2026 annual calendar, chaired by the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PI-CNG), Barrister Ismaeel Ahmed.
Represented by the Corps Commander, Operations Support Service and Special Units, Kumar Tsukwam, Mohammed said only qualified and properly registered riders should be allowed to operate.
He warned that lives were being lost daily to reckless riding, stressing the need for strict adherence to traffic rules. Mohammed also noted that poor road infrastructure contributes to crashes and called for tighter regulation of motorcycles in high-risk areas, particularly in states with weak or nonexistent regulations.
Using the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as an example, he said tricycle operators are restricted from certain areas unless they wear approved colour-coded reflective jackets, a system designed to identify unregistered riders. According to him, proper registration, certification and verification are critical to building a credible association and a safer transport system.
Mohammed also highlighted the FRSC mobile application, which provides a database for verifying vehicle documents and offers real-time updates on bad roads, traffic congestion and crashes.
Earlier, NACTOMORAS President, Alhaji Muh’d Sani Hassan, said the association, registered in 1996, operates nationwide with millions of members and works closely with the FRSC, the Ministry of Transportation and PI-CNG.
Meanwhile, PI-CNG Manager, Asset Deployment, Ahmed Katura, said the programme was introduced to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal, describing CNG as safe, affordable and environmentally friendly. He added that the initiative has been expanded to include electric tricycles and vehicles, noting that thousands of tricycles have been deployed nationwide, with plans to cover all states before the end of the year.
