“Every day, security chiefs now think of how to continue to improve on capacity building. Maybe God has a reason to use ourselves to challenge ourselves. These challenges are coming from within. If they were coming from outside, we would have been embarrassed,” Jonathan said.
The President who spoke at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday during the pre-centenary national praise and thanksgiving service, was specifically commenting on his administration’s efforts towards containing the Boko Haram insurgency.
He said that Nigeria cannot stand any attacks from outside the country.
According to him the nation’s security apparatus would have remained obsolete and its security agents idle and static if not for the advent of the dreaded sect.
Thanking God that the Boko Haram insurgency is a local security threat, the president noted that if it had been external, it would have been more embarrassing for the nation.
He said the activities of the sect had compelled his administration to boost the capacity and infrastructure of the security agencies, especially by enhancing adequate training of security operatives.
Jonathan noted that all the security agencies were idling away and were not proactive before the sect invaded the country. The president, however, expressed optimism that with the continued prayers and support of all Nigerians, the nation would surmount the current security challenges and move forward.
