Insecurity: PDP, Aiyedatiwa trade words over monthly security votes

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa have clashed over the monthly security vote allocated to the governor, amid growing concerns over insecurity across the state.
The PDP accused Aiyedatiwa of failing to channel the N1.2 billion monthly allocation towards addressing what it described as the “worsening” security situation. The party urged the governor to redirect the funds to protect citizens, rather than treating it as a personal entitlement.
In a statement issued Tuesday by its Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbagbo, the PDP said: “Assuming without conceding that the N1.2 billion belongs solely to the governor, would it not be godly for a public-spirited leader to demonstrate compassion by deploying it in the interest of public safety?”
The party challenged Aiyedatiwa to publicly account for the monthly security expenditure, warning that the usual rhetoric from his administration was no longer convincing.
But responding through his spokesman, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the governor described the PDP’s comments as “irresponsible,” stating that security had improved in the past two months.
He said the government has been funding joint patrols involving Amotekun, the police, and local hunters, while creating new security posts and recruiting forest guards.
“Security votes are not personal funds to be donated,” he said. “Those ignorant of governance should stop making baseless claims. Let them name one PDP-led state without security challenges.”
Insecurity in Ondo has worsened recently, with rising cases of abductions and killings. Last week, Nelson Adepoyigi, an APC local chairman in Ifon, Ose LGA, was abducted and murdered by gunmen.
