One of the organisers of the event, who gave the information to Daily Trust in Abuja, said promoters of the event felt highly depressed even though they understood the governor’s reasons after he sent them apology e-mails in addition to calling some of them to plead with them.
“We actually planned it to be surprise birthday for our friend, Governor Kashim Shettima, because he is a very good man and he has remained humble and respectful to his friends even after becoming a governor,” he said.
When contacted, Shettima’s spokesman Isa Gusau, confirmed the governor turned down the offer but said he did not mean any form of disrespect.
“I do not know the motive behind releasing that information to the press but the fact is that the governor meant no disrespect or to frustrate the organisers…. He just doesn’t want to insult the sensibilities of his followers and I think that is important in leadership,” Gusau said.
