The cleric, at an interactive session with journalists in Ibadan, described as “lies and deception” the various figures being dished out to the public by government on the true position of the national treasury just as he advocated transparency in governance in the overall interest of the nation.
The Archbishop declared:  “There are so many ugly and untold stories about the national economy and it all boils down to deception. Nobody can check properly the accounts of the NNPC… For the government to say that it does not know whether some money is lost or not is deception and lies to the public.”
He also expressed concern over the gullibility of the society, noting that integrity has been compromised because of the importance that people now attach to money.
On the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, Archbishop Abegunrin called for continued national prayers for the safe return of the girls while canvassing for government’s rehabilitation programme which will help restore them to normalcy since, according to him, the trauma of their protracted incarceration will be too much for them and their families to bear.
His words:  “Let us pray that our government, if eventually the children come out, will be wise enough, and committed enough, to provide all that is required to bring them to normalcy, even if it requires resettling them in other parts of the country or another clime entirely, so that the trauma of the abduction will not continue to haunt them.  The entire nation need to continue to pray for the Chibok girls.”
