Kano State commissioner for Agriculture, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has said, that the country must maintain her position as major cassava grower in the world in view of its numerous benefits, apart from the fact that it is one of easiest crops to grow in the farm.
Gawuna, who spoke through a director in the ministry at the recently held Village Forum for cassava farmers in Kano State at Getso community in Gwarzo LGA, however, noted with satisfaction that cassava farmers are on the increase in the state.
The event was organised by the state Radio Corporation in partnership with Enable 2, a UK government project support for a better business environment in Nigeria.
The agric commissioner after listening to some of the complaints of the farmers at the event, urged them to form an association to enable them benefit various government inputs to the sector.
He said after a research by the state government, it was discovered that Rogo, Kazare, Gwarzo, Danyawa, Bichi, Dambata are among the few local governments in the state where cassava can be grown optimally.
The community head of Getso, Alhaji Bello Ibrahim Getso, thanked the state government, the state radio and the Enable 2 for their interest in the community and promised to further enlighten the farmers on the important of cassava growing.
Team Leader, Enable 2 project, Kevin Conroy, expressed hope thar problems mentioned by the farmers at the event would be looked into by the relevant authorities, assuring that his team would continue to monitor the impacts of the forum on the farmers.
