A police inspector attached to the Kano State Police Anti-Daba Special Squad and a yet to be identified suspected thug were said to have died in a clash involving the police and some hoodlums in the state.
The police spokesman, S P Magaji Musa Majia said the incident occurred on October 20 during one of the routine raid on criminal hideouts in the state capital.
He said the command received information from concerned community members about a criminal hideout of suspected Yandaba at Kwanar Jaba Quarters and the operatives of the Anti-Daba Squad were drafted to raid and possibly effect arrests.
He said the trouble started after four suspects were arrested by the police and on their way to the office to commence investigation they were waylaid by hundreds of suspected gang members who bear different weapons.
Majia said as the police squad approached the weapon wielding crowd of hoodlums the said Inspector Haruna who was then bearing an AK-47 rifle, alighted from the vehicle to pacify the mob, but one of them suddenly pick an interlocking block and hit him on the head and he fell unconscious to the ground.
“The miscreant quickly picked the AK 47 rifle loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition and attempted to run away with it. He was immediately gunned down and the rifle retrieved while a bullet hit one other member of the gang,” Majia said.
He added that the unconscious body of the Inspector and that of the victim who was shot were rushed to the Hospital for treatment; and on arrival, the suspect was confirmed dead by doctor on call, while Police Inspector was admitted for treatment but on October, 22, he died.
Majia added that six members of the gang have so far been arrested while investigation is still going on to arrest the others.
