The Bayelsa State Police Command has announced that Inspector Sunday Ideh, who subjected his three children to inhuman treatment, will undergo a mental health evaluation to determine his psychological state before facing criminal prosecution.
Inspector Ideh was arrested over the weekend for assaulting his three children over allegations of witchcraft.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Sanusi Mohammed, confirmed the arrest when members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its Vice Chairman, Vivien Brisibe, and the Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Bayelsa State Branch, Dr. Boma Miebaiwho, visited the command headquarters in Yenagoa.
Mohammed described the suspect as a previously upright officer before the incident but assured that the case would not be swept under the carpet and that the erring officer would be diligently prosecuted.
Earlier, the NBA Vice Chairman, Vivien Brisibe, expressed deep concern over the assault, stressing that it was particularly troubling because the perpetrator was a police officer expected to protect, not harm, citizens.
She called for swift and thorough prosecution, stating that the inspector’s actions violated all extant laws in Nigeria.
Also speaking, FIDA Chairperson, Dr. Miebaiwho, raised concern about the welfare of the assaulted children, urging that they should not be handed back to the family, as an NGO had volunteered to take care of them.
Meanwhile, gender-based violence advocacy group, Do Foundation, also demanded the immediate prosecution of the inspector and the protection of the affected children.
