The institute said the violations are partly responsible for disaster occurrences, considering flooding and wild fire outbreak occasioned by the effects of climate change.
Speaking at the opening session of a roundtable on urban and town planning last week, the Director General of NIALS, Prof. Epiphany Azinge said there is no single village in Nigeria that has been successfully transformed into urban area either through political will or urbanization programme.
“Apart from Abuja, I wonder if any other city is planned. Most towns look much unplanned and this has dire consequences in the face of climate change.
“The problem of urban and town planning must appeal to all of us in order to prevent cases of flooding and environmental disaster.
“Therefore, we must put this in the fore front of national discuss by mobilizing experts to raise public consciousness on the dangers of these violations,” he said.
Also speaking in a lead paper presented at the round table, Mr Philip Iyortyer said buildings alone account for 40 percent of the causative factors to climate change.
According to Iyortyer, buildings are the highest contributory factor to the problem of climate change globally, adding “energy burn, gas and car monoxide emissions go straight to further pollute the environment.”
