Institute to encourage farmers on use of groundnuts hybrid seed

This was disclosed by the ICRISAT Country Representative Dr. Hakeem Ajeigbe, during a farmer’s field day held at the institute’s demonstration field in Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State, organised by the institute.
He said the institute aims to combine tested methods of crop commodity research with well-established practices in research in natural resources management for effective and efficient yield in order to boost the nation’s food production capacity.
He added that the institute will continue to campaign for a shift from subsistent production to production on a commercial scale to boost farmers’ economic strengths.
Ajeigbe stated that ICRISAT and the federal ministry of agriculture have been working hand-in-hand to attain national food sustainability within a short period of time.
Explaining to farmers and students during the field day, groundnuts specialist with ICRISAT Dr. Babu Motagi, stated that with the recent improvement recorded in agricultural activities, the great groundnuts pyramid that characterised the ancient city of Kano State could be revived.
According to Motagi, farmers were encouraged to start using the hybrid seeds made available to them because the seeds take less period to mature and also are resistant to a lot of diseases.
He added that the seeds can also produce in areas experiencing erratic rainfall.
