A total of 40 female students are currently undergoing vocational studies in various entrepreneurship skills at His Promise School of Vocational Studies, Okpuno in Awka, Anambra State.
The institute, which started in 2005 with only two students, has also graduated 19 students in various entrepreneurial skills including home economics, computer, fashion design, graphic printing, textile costume and modelling, cosmetology, bead-making and fashion craft among others.
Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, the managing director of the school, Mrs. Evelyn Ngige, said one of the goals of the institute is to bridge the gap between the educated and less educated in the society.
“Our main objective is to impact skills on the young stars towards self-reliance in an environment where emphasis has been on certificate. I urge the grandaunts to ensure they put into practice what they learnt to become employers of labour”
The chairman of the occasion, Mr Harold Godwin, blamed the prevailing economic hardship in the country on government’s inability to harness the capacity of the present systems.
“Most of our systems are underutilised, because in any system you have defined capacity. Government should look inward to ensure that our systems are properly utilised and we can improve by investing without borrowing,” he said.
One of the graduates, Izuagba Chiamaka, said she hated tailoring with a passion prior to her enrolling in the school, but is currently a professional fashion designer within the two and half years she spent in the school.
