The university is the major higher institution of learning in North-eastern part of the country. It has a serene environment for learning with several recreational facilities on campus such as sporting arenas for soccer, basketball etc and Love Garden (ideal for picnics, walks).
For the past three decades, the university has been operating without any hindrances but recently, the university faces many challenges due to the activities of the dreaded Boko Haram group which creates panic and anxiety among students. The development hinders social activities and affects the smooth running of academic activities on campus.
Despite the challenges faced by the university, the students spice up life on campus with cultural shows. Last week, the institution witnessed another round of cultural fiesta which was considered as the best of its kind in terms of unifying the students on campus despite their ethnic and religious differences.
The week-long event brought students from all ethnic backgrounds under one umbrella to celebrate, while performers were dressed in various cultural attires. The Arewa students comprising Hausa, Kanuri, Fulani, Igala, Shuwa Arab shone in their babbarriga while the Igbo, Yoruba, Ibibio and Ijaw wore their hats majestically. Other tribes such as Tiv, Jukun, Efik, Babur Bura, Itsekiri among others were not left behind during the fiesta.
The students danced round the campus with their traditional clothes and displayed their cultural attributes. The week-long event was made more interesting by sharing of native foods prepared by each ethnic group among the students.
Students expressed satisfaction, happiness, unity and love for one another during the event which has been described as a sign of unity in diversity among the students on campus.
The cultural week saw the participation of students from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
