Speaking during a programme organised at the Catholic Social Centre, Kaduna as part of activities to mark the United Nations (UN) World Peace Day tagged: Right of People to Peace, the group noted that a lot of displaced persons were faced with serious agony.
“We are with the displaced, we are standing by them. Various governments must stand by them too. The victims must enjoy peace. The victims of Boko Haram and other attacks by gunmen need to be catered for. “Catering for the displaced can begin with us. Today, if possible, Boko Haram and our military should call for a ceasefire so that the North-East, and indeed Nigeria, can enjoy peace,” national coordinator of the group, The Rev Fr Clement Kagoma said.
Kagoma, who said that peace is a universal right, added, “There is no need to carry guns. Millions of people are displaced. Thousands of people in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State and the North-East don’t have homes. They need to be shown love.
“War must be outlawed; it should not be allowed to happen again. Every state and local government, and the country in general, should ensure that they renounce the use of force in settling disputes. Government must do a lot to bring peaceful coexistence,” the group said.
The non-governmental organisation said they had trained about 2, 000 youths on skills acquisition this year. “The young men and women, who were angry because they did not have jobs, will now enjoy peace. Government must use the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) to empower the youth. We must lead by example. Our leaders must be ambassadors of peace,” the group concluded.
