The Federal Government has been urged to step up its war against smugglers of poultry products so as to protect the Nigerian poultry industry.
This call was made recently in an interview by the President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Architect Kabiru Ibrahim, in his reaction to reports of scarcity of frozen chicken and turkey in the country.
The poultry farmer and former president of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) told Daily Trust that the said scarcity was due to strict measures taken by the government to enforce the ban on importation of poultry products.
He said enough chickens were available in the country, adding that turkey could be scarce because they were not produced in large quantity by the local poultry farmers.
“They said scarcity of frozen chicken and turkey is due to blockage of the borders against smugglers of the products. As I speak with you now, I have enough quantity of chicken in my farm waiting for customers to come and buy. Chicken is also available in various farms across the country. So, there is no need for importation or smuggling.”
