Only cowards with zero electoral value can contemplate truncating the victory recorded by President-elect Asiwaju Bala Tinubu and Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima through imposition of an illegal interim government.

This was the position of a university lecturer and former federal lawmaker, Professor Haruna Yerima, during an interview with journalists in Abuja on Monday.

He said staging a coup against Tinubu is the greatest act of cowardice ever contemplated against constitutional order in the last 24 years of our seamless democratic dispensation.

Professor Yerima, who teaches public policy and administration at Ahmadu Bello Univeristy Zaria, represented Biu, Shani, Kwaya and Bayo federal constituency in Borno state at the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007.

The former lawmaker said, “It is apparent that some Nigerians with treasonable antecedents have not learned the bitter lesson of truncating democratic rule. Contemplating not to hand over to Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima is not only treasonable but an act that will make Nigeria a pariah state similar to what we went through after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections.”

He said Nigerians who massively voted for Tinubu and Shettima during the presidential elections “won’t take any attempt to truncate their painstaking efforts through an illegal interim government. What the country witnessed after the June 12 annulment would be a child’s play compared to what will happen now. Nigerians won’t accept any internet government under whatever guise. 

“Nigerians can’t idly watch some undesirable elements with zero electoral value plunge the country into unnecessary war. They will certainly resist it through various means possible. Nigerians have many reasons to put their lives on the line to protect the sanctity of Tinubu and Shettima’s resounding victory. This is because they emerged through an electoral process adjudged to be the fairest, credible and non-violent in the electoral history of Nigeria.”

Professor Yerima urged the Buhari administration to up its ante by ensuring a smooth transition by May 29, 2023.
