Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya

Gombe State governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya has threatened to dump the state-owned football club, Gombe United following its poor performances in the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier League Football season.

Speaking during New Year Day broadcast on NTA Gombe, Inuwa said though his government is focusing on essential areas like agriculture and security, he shouldn’t be blamed for the poor fortunes of sports in the state.

According to him, those in charge of sports affairs aren’t fulfilling their responsibilities as they should while revealing how much his government gives Gombe United monthly who have not performed well compared to a privately-owned club, Doma United based in the state as well.

“Let me make an example with Gombe United which is a government-owned club.  Since I became governor there has never been a month that I don’t fund the club with N12 million.

“However, there is another club operating in Gombe state called Doma United. We have never given the club any support.

“Although they are both playing in the top league, Doma has advanced while the other Gombe United which is government owned is stagnant like leeches feeding off of an animal. They are not doing what they are supposed to while Doma is utilizing what it has to progress.

“It is for that reason that since the N12 million naira I am putting into Gombe United is not yielding the desired result they will have to sit up and do what they are supposed to do or we will support Doma United instead,” he declared.

It will be noted that Gombe United are currently 16th on the table having six wins, one draw and nine losing with 19 points while Doma United are third with 29 points after winning nine games, drawing two and losing five games.

Meanwhile, Chijoke Alaekwe has joined Libyan side Al Saad for an undisclosed amount, according to reports.

Alaekwe joined the North African side after a brief stint with Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Gombe United.

This season, he made 14 appearances for the Savannah Scorpions in the ongoing NPFL season.

Alaekwe scored twice for the Abubakar Babaganaru’s team, one each against Heartland and Akwa United.

In 2022, the 25-year-old played in the Bangladesh league having previously played for Kano Pillars, Nasarawa United, and the now-defunct Ifeanyi Ubah FC.
