MainOne has called on enterprises to be prepared for the privacy and security concerns posed by the growth of Internet of Things, (IoT).
The Chief Executive Officer of MainOne, Ms Funke Opeke gave the advice in Lagos, during the ‘Nerd Unite’ conference and exhibition organised by MainOne, in collaboration with Schneider, Microsoft and Cisco.
Opeke quoting a report said the amount of internet-connected things will reach 50 billion by 2020 and wearable technology ownership doubled in 2015, increasing from 7 per cent in 2014 to 14 per cent in 2015.
She said that the adoption of new technologies would allow the IT specialists’ businesses to participate in the rapidly changing world.
Opeke explained that IT professional who fail to adopt the evolving technology will limit their ability to participate fully in the benefits of such technology but organizations should also prepare to tackle security challenges that may be associated with the growth.
‘‘The IT space is highly competitive and the early adopters and pioneers benefit the most from new technologies,’’ she said.
Opeke said that new technologies IoT, cloud computing, social media were revolutionising the world and Nigerian businesses need to play along by embracing it.
She said the idea is to make everything connected to the network which cause exponential network growth.
Opeke said IT specialists manning their security, database and other tech-enhanced processes in many technology companies in Nigeria rarely attend events.
This she said informed having a platform such as ‘Nerd Unite’ to bring the company’s customers, who are IT specialists together to learn about new innovations.
