Iran is marking 40 days since what it describes as a national tragedy that has left a deep imprint on its collective memory — the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alongside the killing of schoolgirls in the southern city of Minab.

In a statement made available to Daily Trust by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Abuja, on Tuesday, said the 40-day war has marked a critical turning point for reflection and collective determination.

According to the Embassy, what began as a period of mourning has evolved into a rallying point for resilience, unity, and renewed national resolve.

It added that the recent developments should be best described as external aggression and violations attributed to the United States and Israel, which it said are widely perceived by Iranians as threats to national sovereignty.

“Iran has long been recognized as a peace-seeking nation, committed to good neighborliness and coexistence,” the statement read.

“But history also records Iran’s determination to defend its land and people whenever faced with invasion or occupation. This duality, peacefulness in conduct and firmness in defense, remains central to our national character.”

Analysts say the past 40 days have underscored the resilience of the Iranian people, defying expectations that sustained external pressure would weaken national cohesion.

According to the Embassy, rather than fragmenting society, the crisis has strengthened unity and reinforced a shared sense of purpose. Observers note that many Iranians have drawn on their cultural and historical heritage to navigate the crisis, transforming grief into collective strength.

Their deaths, the Embassy noted, serve as a powerful reminder of the civilian toll of conflict and a call for greater international reflection on the consequences of war.

Ultimately, the Embassy stressed that the 40th day has come to represent more than remembrance.

“It is a turning point that underscores Iran’s identity as a peace-seeking nation that nonetheless stands firm in defense of its sovereignty,” the statement said.
