A Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Obudu division in the northern part of Cross River State, Mr Gabriel Amawu was Tuesday night shot dead by an irate mob.

The spokesperson of the police in the state, DSP Irene Ugbo, said Amawu was killed in his office at the police station when an irate mob of students from the Federal College of Education, Obudu alongside community youths attacked the police station.

It was gathered that the mob had gone to the station to rescue their colleagues, who were arrested by the police during the celebration of the student’s completion of their examination.

It was further gathered that some youths and students of the college were celebrating when Amawu, suspecting criminal activity, made some arrests, which degenerated into the protests.

The police spokesperson said some of the suspects were already in the custody of the police while the remains of Amawu had been evacuated.

In a related development, a senior Secondary School Student of Government Secondary School, Calabar Municipal Local Government Area in Cross River State, allegedly hacked his fellow student over cult activities.

Witnesses said the suspect allegedly brought out an axe and cut through his fellow student’s head during school hours on Tuesday leading to a pandemonium in the school.

The suspect was however caught and handed over to the men of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Nigeria Police, Calabar, it was gathered.

The Special Adviser on Education to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State, Castro Ezama, who was at the school at the time of the incident, condemned the act.

Addressing members of  the Parent Teachers Association after the incident, Ezama advised parents to do more in grooming their wards.
