Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, Sean Hoy, has given indication that his country would like to make substantial investment and improve agricultural production in Cross River State.
The ambassador, who said Calabar has been home to Irish missionaries before now, stated that there are lots of agricultural potentials in the state such that can efficiently boost the local economy.
According to him, his country currently produces 10 times what it consumes, and would like to equally deploy the expertise and know-how to also make the state supply much of Nigeria’s food.
He commended Cross River for being a state that stands out in the country, adding that he would want Ireland to take advantage of the vast arable land in the state and invest in agriculture, especially in diary, feed milling, cultivation of tomatoes and potatoes for export.
Earlier, the state Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, encouraged Ireland to invest in agriculture in the state.
“In Cross River, we have a strong Irish heritage, especially in Calabar. I really will like to see a stronger Irish presence in agriculture. I want Irish companies to take advantage of the potentials our state offers,” the governor stated.
