Last week, the social media was abuzz with the video of a woman who confronted and harassed a lady said to be her husband’s girlfriend. The alleged girlfriend, who looked timid and wasn’t in any way ready to create a scene, simply tried to walk away.
Some social media critics took a jab at the wife for creating such a scene at a shopping mall, while others took her to the gutters for looking shabby and unkept, justifying why the husband would have gone for a lady who looked chic and appealing. Is our appearance a reason for men to cheat? Womanhood sampled some views.
Aisha Shuaibu, 41-year-old biologist, believes our appearance is a factor to why men cheat. She says, “Most women are to be blamed for whatever they face in their matrimonial home. Many of them instantly let go of themselves once they start having babies. Not all men appreciate how our body changes after having children. I always tell those who are willing to listen that let the man be the one worrying about not losing you instead of you worrying about not losing him and the best way to do this is by taking care of yourself and looking good. I have three children and I still look good. It was embarrassing to watch that video, the wife should start taking care of herself, maybe her husband will find her attractive once more.”
Amina Muhammad, 40-year-old consultant, believes a woman should look good for herself and not the man, “I am amazed at how people went on to judge and attack the wife and even concluded that it was because of her appearance and stature that the husband was cheating on her. One thing I have come to understand in life is that it doesn’t make a difference if you look hot and sexy or not, a man who will cheat will cheat. But on the other hand, that is not reason enough for a woman and a wife for that matter to look shabby. I am not against one looking nice, in fact, I am an advocate of a woman looking smarter and elegant after having children. We should all look nice irrespective of children or not because it is a good thing. Looking good gives you prestige, confidence and makes you feel good. Look good for yourself and not for the man, because looking good doesn’t guarantee you a man that won’t cheat. Simple!”
Clara Tochukwu, 39-year-old civil servant, says, “No woman should let go of herself just because she has started having children. However, looking good shouldn’t give you total believe that a man will forever be faithful. Men are polygamous in nature and no matter how you keep up with trends and look good, a cheat of a husband will stoop to lower levels, like going for maids, etc., who are not on the same level with you. Some ladies are plus size in nature, and no matter what they do, they can never be skinny. Mind you, plus size can as well look sexy and cute to the admiration of even the slim ladies. My advice to women is to be who they are and do whatever makes you happy. There is more to life than worrying about keeping a man. Even if you have all the looks, money, qualifications in the world, a man can simply walk away from the marriage.”
