Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Prof. Hafizu Abubakar, has said Islamic values of justice, equity and inclusiveness offer practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges of diversity, nationhood and peaceful coexistence.

He stated this at the International Islamic Conference in Kano, organised by the Department of Islamic Studies, Northwest University, in collaboration with the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).

Prof. Abubakar, who is also chairman of the university’s Governing Council, said Nigeria’s struggle as a plural society mirrors lessons from early Islamic history, particularly the Medina experience under Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“Our Prophet met a diverse society in Medina and organised it in a way that ensured fairness, inclusion and peace. That is what Nigeria needs today,” he said.

He urged scholars to ensure that academic discourse translates into practical solutions capable of bridging religious and ethnic divides, stressing the need to view Islam in its true perspective.

Head of the Department of Islamic Studies, Dr. Nura Abubakar Gwadabe, said the conference aimed to generate practical ideas to tackle insecurity, economic challenges and nationalism.

He attributed many of Nigeria’s crises to intolerance and a loss of shared values.

Director of Bayero University’s Centre for Gender Studies, Safiya Ahmad Nuhu, said the discussions were timely, urging scholars to engage emerging global issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence and global health from Islamic perspectives.
