An Islamic scholar in Bida, Niger State, Ustaz Muhammadu Kudu-Tafyan, has urged political leaders to always abide by their oaths of office and avoid excessive desire for wealth.
He said political officeholders must “remember the Day of Judgement in the discharge of their duties to the electorate.”
Speaking on Monday during an annual Maulud celebration, Kudu-Tafyan said there was the need for both elected and appointed leaders to live above board.
“They should always remember that they have either sworn with the Holy Qur’an or the Holy Bible, and as such, they should not renege,” he said.
He also advised leaders to prioritise diligence, honesty, hard work, prudence, transparency and dedication; and above all, the fear of God in the discharge of their duties to the people.
The cleric also called on the Muslims in the country to use the Maulud period to pray for the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria, as well as assist the leaders to overcome the security challenges bedeviling the nation.
He said continuous prayers would enable the nation to overcome the anti-social acts threatening the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.    
According to Ustaz Kudu-Tafyan, “Maulud is not only for merrymaking, but a time to emulate what Prophet Muhammad (SWA) was sent by the Almighty God to come and do,” adding that Prophet Muhammad preached peace, love and unity.
