Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, lawyer and social commentator, has criticised Israel over the ongoing war in Gaza.
Since the October 7, 2023 invasion of Israel by Hamas, Israel has declared war on Gaza.
Many attempts for a ceasefire have failed, with over 41,000 people killed – 40,435 Palestinians and 1,478 Israeli.
Among the casualties are 116 journalists (111 Palestinian, 2 Israeli and 3 Lebanese) and over 224 humanitarian aid workers.
Weighing in on the situation in an interview with the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation, Fani-Kayode described the war as a “genocide” perpetrated by the Zionist state against Palestinians.
He accused Israel of committing atrocities against Palestinian children, women and men, using advanced weaponry with impunity.
“This is not just a recent issue but a long-standing tragedy,” Fani-Kayode asserted. “What has unfolded over the past 11 months is a stark revelation of the Zionist state’s barbarity. Thousands of innocent Palestinians are being slaughtered while the so-called civilized world remains passive.”
He suggested that the international community should rally more robustly in support of Palestinians, drawing parallels with past struggles against oppression, such as the fight against apartheid in South Africa and slavery in America.
A former Nigerian minister, Fani-Kayode also spoke about the possibility of armed conflict as a response to the occupation, though he emphasized his preference for a peaceful resolution.
He advocated for a two-state solution, though he acknowledged that this approach has been largely rejected by the Israeli government.
