Lakemfa made this call at the ongoing 102nd International Labour Conference of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) holding in Geneva, Switzerland, lamenting that unless drastic action is taken, by June 2014, 44.5 million workers will enter the labour market.
He charged stakeholders to “as an integral part of the post-2015 Agenda, redirect the attention of the world to meeting the 1986 ILO Basic Needs Agenda of full and productive employment, right to food, shelter, education, water, electricity, communication and transportation.
“There can be no world without these working these working people. It is in this wise that the ILO has to reject the evangelism of the market place in which human beings are objects and mere statistics in the balancing of budgets.
“Making profit is good, but not at the cost of human lives. The fact that public funds are used to bail private banks, show that the state remains the most important instrument in the socio-economic wellbeing of the citizenry.
“Just as the state did not abandon the troubled banks to the so-called market forces, so can it not abandon the poor, the disposed, the unemployed, the homeless, the sick, the aged and the hapless to the insatiable thirst of market forces.”
