The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has graduated 200 youths it trained on skills acquisition.

The youth were sponsored by the member representing Lafia/Obi federal constituency, Sarki Dahiru Abubakar, in commemoration of this year’s World Skills Day in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

In his remarks at the closing ceremony of the ITF/Federal Government Skills Empowerment Programme, the Director General of ITF, Sir Joseph N. Ari, disclosed that start-up kits have already been procured for onward distribution to the graduates having completed their training.

The ITF director general, who was represented at the event by the Nasarawa State area manager of the fund, Garba Hassan, said the 200 youths were trained on tailoring and fashion design, welding, fabrication, plumbing and pipe-fitting, aluminum, tiling, Plaster of Paris (PoP) and photography.

In his remarks, the lawmaker said the skills acquisition was the only option to curb the unemployment menace in the country.

The training, which lasted for three months, gulped N24 million – N120,000 was expended on each of the 200 trainees during the programme which was carried out under the ITF/Federal Government Skills Empowerment Programme (FEGOSEP).

He said that the Federal Government was considering cutting down the size of the federal civil service to a manageable number, hence, it was now left for the skills acquisition sector to take over the employer role previously played by government at all levels.
