The President AFRH, Prof. Osato Giwa-Osagie, made the call at a press briefing in Lagos to announce its 4th annual AFRH international conference holding in Lagos between 24th and 26th September.
The AFRH mandate seeks to create awareness among all persons within Nigeria, Africa and abroad, of the importance of reproductive health.
The AFRH consist of reproductive health practitioners, doctors, embryologists, fertility nurses, counselors, pharmacists and IVF /fertility clinics.
Prof. Giwa-Osagie said with the growth of the IVF in Nigeria, it was important to guard against quackery to save the lives of women.
“There should be proper regulation that would define the guidelines and practice of IVF practice in Nigeria, he said adding that AFRH is willing to support government in defining the regulation.
He also noted that regulation would help the industry grow better and provide better solutions to families who desire babies.
AFRH noted that infertility is a source of social, mental and emotional distress, especially in sub Saharan Africa where high premise is placed on child-bearing.
He said this year’s edition garbed with the theme “Improving Pregnancy Rate of IVF in AFRICA” will expose amongst several intricate issues; Ethics in IVF, New Technologies in IVF, Low Cost IVF in Nigeria, Role of Reproductive Surgery and Quality Control.
