Luxury retailers in Nigeria have disclosed that empowering women is key to innovation, community development and economic growth.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day and the 50th anniversary of Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil, the group said the growing recognition of women within the luxury industry reflects a deeper understanding that supporting women unlocks economic progress.

Present at the event was Nollywood actress and producer, Monalisa Chinda, who described the event as a celebration of craftsmanship and the strength of women.

“Today we celebrate grace, excellence and the remarkable women whose presence continues to inspire the world around us. Today we want to celebrate style. We want to celebrate craftsmanship and the strength of women. So, I am honoured.”

“In celebration of the International Women’s Day and, of course, the Women’s month. A watch is more than an accessory. It marks moments. It marks achievements and journeys. And that defines us.”

Onyekachi Okpara, director of Kare Showroom, said the theme of this year’s celebration highlights the value of giving and collaboration.

“This year’s theme, is about recognising that when we give, we also gain through connections, opportunities and growth. We cannot over-emphasise the importance of women. Today, all month long, all week long for us, we applaud the impact of women in our lives, our communities, and our workplaces, ” adding that women remain central to the functioning of society and to the growth of businesses and communities.

“By empowering women with opportunities, we gain innovation and excellence. By supporting women-led initiatives, we gain stronger communities,” she said.

In his contribution, Maricel Romero Cantel Jamal, honorary consul of Colombia to Nigeria, said the gathering highlighted the role of women as drivers of development and innovation.

“We are here not just to celebrate beauty and craftsmanship, but also to give and gain. When you give a woman an opportunity, you gain a lot of development in your community.”

Cezno Benson, executive director of Luxury Group Nigeria, said women should be celebrated every day for their contributions to families, businesses and society.

“I don’t know why we need a special day to celebrate women, because women should be celebrated every day,” Benson said.
