Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely one week after announcing her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is as the party unveiled veteran journalist Dr. Lateefat Yemi Kolapo-Sowunmi as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.

Iyabo’s return to the PDP became evident on Monday when she made a surprise appearance at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta during the official unveiling of Kolapo-Sowunmi as deputy governorship candidate.

Her arrival sparked excitement among party members and leaders, who accorded her a rousing welcome.

The former Ogun Central senator joined PDP governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu and the state chairman, Abayomi Tella, in presenting Kolapo-Sowunmi to party supporters.

She also raised the deputy governorship candidate’s hand alongside party leaders in a symbolic show of support.

Sources within the party disclosed that Senator Obasanjo is expected to formally complete her return to the PDP at a reception scheduled for Tuesday.

Iyabo had defected to the APC in January and declared her intention to contest the Ogun governorship election.

However, after failing to secure the party’s ticket, she announced her resignation from the ruling party last week, citing what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection and maltreatment by the APC leadership in Ogun State.

Speaking at the event, she urged voters to remain vigilant and protect their votes in the 2027 election, warning against a repeat of what she described as “vote stealing” during the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections.

She maintained that Adebutu was denied victory in previous elections and expressed confidence that such would not happen again in 2027.

Earlier, PDP State Chairman Abayomi Tella formally unveiled Kolapo-Sowunmi as the party’s deputy governorship candidate.

In her acceptance speech, the deputy governorship candidate thanked the party leadership and members for the confidence reposed in her, describing her emergence as a call to greater service and sacrifice.

She pledged unwavering loyalty to the PDP and Adebutu, promising to deploy her experience, commitment and passion for public service toward rebuilding Ogun State.
