Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extolled the enduring legacy of the state’s first civilian governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, describing him as a visionary leader who transformed Lagos State in ways that continue to shape governance in the state.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ibrahim Layode, at a special Fidau prayer marking the fifth anniversary of Jakande’s passing in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said the late statesman transformed Lagos in ways that remain visible decades after his tenure.

He said: “His actions showed us that the government is a powerful tool for enhancing daily life, creating opportunities, restoring dignity and a style both for current and future generations.”

Sanwo-Olu commended Jakande for his policies that expanded access to free education as well as in the housing sector where thousands of families have a stable apartment to live.

“However, what we understand in the legacy of Alhaji Lateef Jakande is the principle he championed which is that leadership is a sacred trust and governance is about serving with fairness, integrity and a long-term vision,” he said.

The remembrance event, organised by Jakande’s family, featured prayers and tributes highlighting his record in public service.

Leading the prayers, Chief Imam of Nawair-ud-deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Abdulmajeed Ayinla, prayed for Allah to grant the late leader eternal rest, noting his immense contributions to human and social development.

 

Associate Professor Saheed Timehin of the Lagos State University urged Nigerians to reflect on the power of enduring legacies, describing Jakande’s achievements in education and journalism as unmatched. “Within four years and three months, he achieved what remains unequal,” he said.

 

Retired sociology professor, Lai Olurode, also paid tribute, describing Jakande as a symbol of ethical leadership, fiscal discipline, and modest public service devoid of flamboyance.
